As a
part of the proposal to establish collaboration with internationally reputed
institutes under University Grants Commission’s (UGC) innovative programme, M.Sc.
Conservation of Marine Environment, Dr. Matiss Zagars and Mr. Kalvis Grinvalds,
Lead Researchers from Institute of Environmental Solutions in Latvia were on a
14 days visit of to V.O. Chidambaram College, Thoothukudi from 10.06.2014 to
23.06.2014. They are experts working on ecosystem functioning studies
pertaining to Lakes and mangroves in many counties including Latvia under
collaborative initiatives. They are on a mission to V.O. Chidambaram College to
explore the possibility of establishing long-term research collaboration with
Post-graduate and Research Department of Zoology and to have student exchange
programmes.
The collaborative research programme has already been initiated
with the survey to assess the coastal fish community composition and feeding dynamics in Punnaikayal
mangroves led by Dr. A. Murugan,
Assistant Professor, PG and Research Dept. of Zoology and assisted by Dr. M.
Xavier Ramesh, Project Associate. The work to ascertain the fish community
composition and studies pertaining to their feeding dynamics in the Punnaikayal
mangroves are in progress.
Dr. Matiss Zagars gave a lecture to post-graduate
students of Conservation of Marine Environment, Zoology and Botany and
interacted with them.
Dr. A. Murugan, coordinated their visit and research activities
with the active support and guidance of Dr. C. Veerabahu, Principal, Dr. J.
Edwin, Head of PG and Research Dept. of Zoology and Dr. G. Manimaran, Head of
PG and Research Dept. of Geology of V.O. Chidambaram College.
